Unfortunately a very similar issue happened to me a few years ago although it first manifested itself as sha1sum/md5sum of large files (like iso's) would come out wrong and and after some time led to some strange drive issues. Finally someone suggested testing the memory, which seemed like a waste of time to me, but was exactly the problem, one slightly faulty stick. Doh!
heh, the interesting detail is: CentOS
Apart from that, this sounds just like my setup .. except that I don't have any backups (oh oh oh, let's hope I didn't jinx it) - and the CPU is way too crappy for KVM sexyness I'm waiting for 2TB server HDD hitting the stores to replace the countless HDDs I added over time whenever I needed more storage space. How are the USB HDDs doing? Is it OK in a server environment?
Well, I wouldn't call it a "server" environment, unless you consider sitting in my closet such a thing
The USB drive is only used as a backup drive, and works quite well for its purpose. It's obviously a bit slow, but works well for my intended use. |
