The annual
FBI Computer Crime Survey is out. This year viruses and spyware are leading the pack.
What I find truely amazing is how organizations are willing to tolerate this. If I was losing money due to a virus problem, I would demand the vendor fix it, or switch to a product that properly prevents viruses. The analogy that comes to mind is if an automaker knows their cars are likely to catch fire and explode randomly. I know this isn't accurate since there would likely be a loss of life in that instance, but perhaps we can think of a better analogy.
Imagine you have an office building which uses wizbang locks. The only problem with wizbang locks is that sometimes they let the crooks in. It should be noted that the crooks don't actually have to pick the locks, they just turn the knob and it opens. Luckily this doesn't work for the honest people, but why would they be trying to open the door in the middle of the night anyway?
The other problem with the locks though, is they have 19 keyholes, 12 keypads, 15 fingerprint scanners and dial which nobody really knows what it does.
Complexity, products that don't work as advertised, and people tolerating all this are the real problems. Somehow throughout the history of computers, people have come to accept that viruses are part of using a computer. This shouldn't be the case, but sadly it is.
So enjoy the report and remember that the nightmares about viruses and spyware will only last for a day or two
